Das Maedchen an den Mai

Es ist doch im April fuerwahr
Der Fruehling weder halb noch gar;
Komm, Rosenbringer, suesser Mai,
Komm du herbei,
So weiss ich, was der Fruehling sei!

—Wie aber? soll die erste Gartenpracht,
Narzissen, Primeln, Hyazinthen,
Die kaum die hellen Augen aufgemacht
Schon welken und verschwinden?
Und mit euch besonders, holde Veilchen,
Waer' es dann fuers ganze Jahr vorbei?
Lieber, lieber Mai,
Ach, so warte noch ein kleines Weilchen!

Eduard Moerike

From a Girl to May

True it is that in April
Spring is neither half nor whole;
Come, bringer of roses, sweet May,
Do come now,
That I know what spring is like!

—But how? Should the first garden splendor,
Daffodils, primroses and hyacinths,
That have hardly opened their bright eyes
Wither so soon and die?
And as for you especially, precious violets,
Would
then your time be over for the year?
Sweet, sweet May,
Ah, then do
wait a little while longer!
