First Flight

Do you remember
our grade school love
that heat-laden afternoon
when we stopped along the pond
and for the first time held hands
while watching a red-wing in the rushes
staring at us while swaying
on its reedy perch
as if prying our love
deep into our hearts—
for ever, I thought.
