In the Wheat ~ Songs in Your Presence
                 14

53

We tried so hard
to learn discipline
in those young years
when emotions welled
like never before or since,
but with time
we learned
to rein them in,
even if
we somehow felt
that part of us
was missing.

54

When they talked about
formation of habits
to gain Your favor,
we listened.
But we knew
that repetition as such
would deprive us
of all our pent up
inventiveness.

55

They were careful
to make us aware
of tradition
but You gave us
our own intuition
and we,
in our simplicity,
wooed You
with dogged boyish ineptitude.

56

After a while
those whose students
we were
perceived
there was no further need
to condition us
to Your service,
for in doing
what they told us,
and more,
we now needed
bridling.
