Im Fruehling

Hier lieg ich auf dem Frühlingshügel:
Die Wolke wird mein Flügel,
Ein Vogel fliegt mir voraus.
Ach, sag mir, all-einzige Liebe,
Wo du bleibst, dass ich bei dir bliebe!
Doch du und die Lüfte, ihr habt kein Haus.

Der Sonnenblume gleich steht mein Gemüte offen,
Sehnend,
Sich dehnend
In Lieben und Hoffen.
Frühling, was bist du gewillt?
Wann werd ich gestillt?

Die Wolke seh ich wandeln und den Fluss,
Es dringt der Sonne goldner Kuss
Mir tief bis ins Geblüt hinein;
Die Augen, wunderbar berauschet,
Tun, als schliefen sie ein,
Nur noch das Ohr dem Ton der Biene lauschet.

Ich denke dies und denke das,
Ich sehne mich, und weiß nicht recht, nach was:
Halb ist es Lust, halb ist es Klage;
Mein Herz, o sage,
Was webst du für Erinnerung
In golden grüner Zweige Daemmerung?
— Alte unnennbare Tage!

Eduard Moerike 1828

Springtime

Here I lie on the hill of spring:
A cloud becomes my wing,
A bird flies out before me.
Ah, tell me, my one and only love,
Where are you, that I might abide with you!
But you and the winds, you have no house.

The sunflower opens as does my heart,
Longing,
Expanding
In love and hope.
Spring, what is your intent?
When will my thirst be quenched?

I see the river and a cloud shifting,
The kiss of golden sunlight I feel
Deep within my veins.
My eyes, in wondrous ecstasy,
Seem to be drowsy with sleep,
Only my ear that hears the humming of bees.

I think about this, think about that,
I long for something, I know not what:
'tis half desire, half lament;
Oh my heart, do tell me,
What memories you are weaving
In golden green boughs when night is falling?
— Bygone days too dear to name!

. . . . So much longing of the heart opening out into nature in the pure German romantic spirit . . .
