Chamber Music

One evening at a concert
A gemmed bracelet fell
Onto a hardwood floor
And came to rest between the leg
Of a baroque stool
And the heel
Of a scarlet linen shoe.

They left it lying there
Until the last strains
Of a Haydn trio
Had faded away
And the silence that followed
Had given way to clapping.
