Zitronenfalter im April

Grausame Fruehlingssonne,
Du weckst mich vor der Zeit,
Dem nur in Maienwonne
Die zarte Kost gedeiht!
Ist nicht ein liebes Maedchen hier,
Das auf der Rosenlippe mir
Ein Troepfchen Honig beut,
So muss ich jaemmerlich vergehn
Und wird der Mai mich nimmer sehn
In meinem gelben Kleid.

Eduard Moerike

Brimstone Butterfly in April

Cruel spring sun,
You waken me too early,
For whom the tender morsel ripens
Only in the bliss of May!
Is there no lovely maiden here
Who would offer me a drop of honey
On her rosebud lips,
Lest I pitifully perish
Before May ever sees me
In my yellow dress.
