When in the basilica in Assisi
Giotto touched his brush
to the dry walls
did they give in gently
to the pressure
he brushed onto that thin layer
of moist narrative color
or did his brush
move swiftly
so he could keep his thoughts
from losing their focus
on the on the luminous poverillo?
