Wird unbarmherzig im Verhoer gefragt;

Dann gegen Spott mich jugendlich erhitzte

So eine Dosis Wahnsinn mitgegeben:
Laß Gnade walten! Nach Proportion –
Du kannst's in meines Lebens Akten lesen –
Bin ich noch ziemlich ordentlich gewesen.

Da steh' ich. Weh! Er runzelt seine Brauen,
Oeffnet den Mund zu toedtlichem Gericht,
Mir schwanet von der tiefsten Hoelle Grauen –
Doch seht! Er sinnt – er faellt den Spruch noch nicht;
Nun, alter Esel! Da, zur Rechten wandre!
Man rechnet dir so Eines in das Andre.

Lyrische Gaenge - Kapitel 79

Nevertheless

I must tell about a frightful face,
That often plagues me after a hearty feast.
'tis then I dream of the Last Judgement Day,
Gruesome the lightning at break of dawn,
When about the changing story of my life
Am I faced with merciless questioning;
I toss about on my mattress
And every hour gnaws at my conscience.

So, for example, like at the elegant table
With champagne that flowed all too amply,
I from out of the upturned goblet
Onto the fine dress of a lady did pour,
And dazed likewise by the beam of her eyes
Committed some other blunders -- no small ones --,
But then as youths do I flared up against the mockers
And sense and nonsense went amiss.

During the night with trembling and shaking
I stood in my dream before the judgement throne.
Ah, I cried, Lord! Remember that for my lifetime
You gave me with -- o, you know full well! -
Such a dose of madness:
Let mercy prevail! In due portion --
You can read about it in the record of my life --
Yet I have tried to live in fairly orderly fashion.

Here I stand. Woe to me! He knits his brow,
Opens his mouth for the fatal judgement,
I sense the horror from the depths of hell --
But look! He considers -- does not speak a word;
Now he putting on a more friendly face --
To my advantage: he nods, he smiles and he speaks:
Now, you old fool! There, move over to the right!
For you we can work something out.
