Wo gehst du hin, du schoenes Kind?
Zu melken, Herr! — sprach Gotelind.

Wer ist dein Vater, du schoenes Kind?
Der Mueller im Tal — sprach Gotelind.

Wie, wenn ich dich freite, schoenes Kind?
Zu viel der Ehre! — sprach Gotelind.

Was hast du zur Mitgift, schoenes Kind?
Herr, mein Gesicht! — sprach Gotelind.

So kann ich dich nicht wohl frein, mein Kind.
Wer hat's Euch geheissen? — sprach Gotelind.

Chivalrous Courting

Where goest thou, sweet child?
To milk the cow, Sir!— said Gotelind.

Who is thy father, sweet child?
The miller in the dale— said Gotelind.

And, if I would marry thee, sweet child?
An honor too great!— said Gotelind.

Hast thou a dowry, sweet child?
My face, Sir!— said Gotelind.

Then I had better not marry thee, my child.
Who asked
thee to?— said Gotelind.
